Officials warn of prepaid phones in crimes, but mum of latest ‘perp’ killings

Santo Domingo.- Telecoms have more than five million unregistered prepaid phones that will be suspended by Dominican Republic’s regulator, Indotel, National Police Manuel  Castro warned Tuesday, just days after numerous killings of alleged criminals by agents.

He said starting June 12, users of prepaid phone lines will have to register.

Castro said the measure will prevent that citizens figure with phone numbers in their name without their knowledge, and will help fight crime, 

He said an investigation found that more than 80% of mobile phones used by perpetrators of various crimes are prepaid lines or so- called “maco” (toad) cell phones.

Prepaid cellphone rates in South Africa are among the highest in the world, the World Economic Forum’s 2014 Global Information Technology Report showed.

Of the 148 countries included in the report, South Africa was rated at 128th, behind Zimbabwe, Iran and Pakistan.

MTN is South Africa’s biggest mobile services provider – and is active in 21 other countries. Of these, 10 have lower mobile rates than South Africa.

Ghana is serviced by MTN and has the 18th-lowest mobile rates in the world, according to the report.

In Ghana, the fixed interconnection rate is 4 pesewa, or 15c.
