Scammers demanding Green Dot prepaid cards in exchange for cleared warrants

A new scam has cropped up in Washington County: The sheriff’s office and local police departments have received reports of calls demanding payment to clear a warrant.
According to a press release from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the scammer calls residents at random, identifies himself as a Washington County deputy sheriff and says the resident has a warrant for their arrest.
The caller tells the victim they will be arrested if they don’t buy a Green Dot prepaid card in a specified amount and pay them to clear the warrant. When the victim has the card, the scammer arranges to meet them to obtain it. If the resident refuses to pay, the caller threatens to come to their house and arrest them.
