Bill Would Allow Vote on Cellphone Tax

Cellphone users may see their bills rise slightly to fund 911 services if a bill passes in the Missouri Legislature.

The bill would allow cities and counties to put to a vote of the people whether to impose on themselves a monthly fee not to exceed $ 1.50 per communication service, such as a landline or cellphone.

No estimate is available as to how much money it would produce.

First District County Commissioner Tim Brinker recently discussed the bill during a meeting and said he hopes it will pass.

He noted that revenue from the county’s 15 percent landline tax continues to decline as people rely solely on cellphones.

“When people give up those landlines that tax decreases, and we have nothing to replenish that or replace those revenues,” Brinker said.

Franklin County’s landline tax is projected to generate $ 800,000 this year. The money from the landline tax is 99 percent of the revenue to the county’s Enhanced 911 Fund.

Missouri is one of the last states to not have a cellphone 911 tax, Brinker said.
