Valley Baby Gets $ 529 Scholarship

Rockingham County, VA – One valley baby is already saving for college after being born Tuesday afternoon.
The cost of tuition and fees when it comes to college is skyrocketing compared to other consumer prices. It’s even ahead of health care and energy. That’s why a the nurses at Sentara RMH say parents of newborns here are so grateful for the “Virginia529” scholarship.
This year’s baby was born around 5:17 p.m., Tuesday, May 29. The winner of the scholarship, which amounts to $ 529, is the baby born closest to 5:29 p.m. on May 29. Though this year’s winner’s family wasn’t available for an interview, the hospital staff who deliver the scholarship to the babies say they’re happy to help.
“We always go in and talk to the parents and see if they would like to participate. Most always they do. It’s a really nice award for a baby to get started thinking about their college future. Usually parents are really excited and very happy to receive the award, and it’s usually a surprise,” shared Sabrina Shiflett, director of the family birthplace at Sentara RMH.
